Unusual Urban Furniture: Benches

The most intriguing peculiarity of urban furniture designing (benches in particular) is the absence of any strict technological requirements neither to the quantity of seats nor to the materials. That is why designers from different countries can boldly experiment with the shape of benches at the same time bearing in mind comfort of townspeople.

We keep following all the modern tendencies in urban design and in architecture of landscape elements. It is necessary to have the possibility to learn and apply those interesting boons that will be popular in the future.

During the passed year we collected a lot of information about new things and design concepts of urban furniture. Beginning from this month we will publish in our News section a review of the most interesting and unusual solutions. The first in our list are benches and seats. Review of this day is dedicated not to practicability and design (although such things are also present here), but to an unusual approach to creation of furniture. Thus, Studio Julien Carretero worked out a furniture concept named To Be Continued Furniture. It looks like an unfinished experiment by a student-designer. Nevertheless this furniture turned out to be rather comfortable and attractive for buyers.

The second place is taken by the seat, on the surface there are words from somebody’s letter. This unusual element is located in the area of Bristol Hospital (England). Chocolate Bench — this is the name the French Claire Eglizeaud and Paul Moreau gave to their series of «tasty» furniture.

Lack of space for urban furniture on the pavement near parking places inspired industrial designer Ken Maury from Los-Angeles to create «stool on the pole».

We find the last bench concept one of the most successful. Designer Huampi Sammartino combined a bench with a flower pot in a simple and elegant way. This man surely knows his job!
